The decoration, with a Mexican pottery motif, permits full display of the warm colors, and is effectively framed by a red line. Even the shape is distinctive! Made of the finest semi-porcelain, with an ivory body, it has a Velvet glaze that is soft and lovely to the touch and the eye. Its smart in every detail, and such a change. This group consists of. (1) Berry Bowl Circa 1942: Embracing the popularity of the Southwest scene of the 30s and 40s, Homer Laughlin’s Mexicana decal with its simple array of various clay pots in dramatic light with green cacti in the background has become the most widely recognized. Add to it a hand applied cold painted red stripe and the delicate shape of the Century/Riviera Berry Bowl and you have a delightful piece of Americana dinnerware. This example is in very nice condition without damage or distracting wear. (1) Berry Bowl Circa May 1941: The Hacienda Decal showcases a cascade of southwestern pots and cacti, a house in the background, and a bench with sombrero and Mexican blanket in the foreground. Shown here on a Homer Laughlin Century shape berry bowl, the Hacienda Decal is applied and a Red Stripe is hand painted at the end of production. (4) 9 Luncheon Hacienda plates Circa 1940: Homer Laughlin’s Century pottery line lended itself not only to Riviera, but too many of their decal ware lines as well. Mexicana, with its cascade of southwestern pots and cacti has become the most widely known of their many decals. This is an example of the 8 3/4 Century shape luncheon plate with the Mexicana decal – nicely stamed in gold on reverse. (1) 6 Mexicana Bread & Butter Plate with Red Stripe Circa 1938: The bread and butter plate is an essential part of a tablewares selection. The humble 6 bread and butter plate is perhaps the cornerstone piece of a potteries line. Homer Laughlin celebrates it here with the addition of a Mexicana decal and a boldly painted red stripe. Homer Laughlin’s Century pottery line lended itself not only to Riviera, but to many of their decal ware lines as well. Riviera pre-date the better-known Fiestaware by only a few years. This pattern is a rounded square with a decidedly Art Deco flair to it. Because Riviera is a lighter weight pottery than Fiesta, the pieces tended to chip on the underside. No marks or stamps. Riviera was only produced for about 10 years, and is considerably less common that Fiestaware or even Harlequin patterns.
